What is so Special About Trackbacks

August 19, 2010 by Joseph · Leave a Comment

If you are a blogger, you have probably heard something about trackbacks. You may not know exactly what they are and what they have to do with your blog, but you have at least heard the name.

Whether you know anything about trackbacks or not, it’s okay. Most people don’t quite understand how trackbacks work and why they are useful for a blog. In this post we are going to discuss trackbacks — what they are, how they work, why they are important to blog traffic, and how to get more trackbacks. After you’ve read this, you’ll know practically everything there is to know about trackbacks and their relationship to traffic generation.

So, what are trackbacks?

The concept of trackbacks is a bit hard to explain. So we’ll use
an example to explain it in the best way possible.

OK, say you see a great blog post on another person’s blog and want to link to it on your blog. You could do this the old-fashioned way by manually putting a link on your site to that blog. However, if you do it this way, the person whose blog post you are linking to won’t know that you are linking to them unless you tell them.

This is where trackbacks come in. A trackback is a program which
will notify the owner of a blog when one of their posts has been
linked to at another blog.

How do they work?

A blog that has a trackback system set up will have a link at the bottom of every blog post. This link will say something like “Blog This!” Anyone who clicks the link can then put a link to that blog post on their site. The person who posted the original
blog will then be notified via email that their blog posting has been linked to. Additionally, the link that was clicked(“Blog This!”) will change to “Trackbacks”. From that point forward, the “Trackbacks” link will keep track of how many people have chosen to blog about that particular post. So after the first trackback, it will say “Trackbacks: 1”. The number of trackbacks recorded will be updated as they occur.

Why are trackbacks important to blog traffic?

Building a Blog to be Profitable

December 22, 2009 by Joseph · Leave a Comment

You may have wanted to start a blog of your own online with the idea of making money from the various avenues available.  Choosing a free blog hosting service may seem like a no-brainer, but take a moment to consider your options.  Although there are several free blogging services available online, there are several reasons why you might want to make your choice carefully, like making a blog profit for instance.  Here are a few guidelines for you to follow in your decision.

Some who are into blog writing don’t feel that a larger, well known site is enough of a selling point to convince them; especially when they are looking to make a blog profit.  Those who choose to go with smaller and sometimes newer blog hosting sites do so for many reasons, but perhaps the biggest advantage is a fairly unusual one; many blog writers tend to believe that the internet is a place where the underdog has a much stronger chance of success, and by choosing one of the smaller blogging sites for hosting, they are buying into that underdog mindset.

If your plan is to make money from advertising, then for the most part, the free blogging sites should be avoided. Although they might put advertising on your page, they do this as a trade, in order to offer you the free service. You are not permitted to do any advertising at all. One of the only free blogging services that will allow Google Adsense is www.blogger.com. This site is owned by Google, so you can almost guarantee that your blog is going to be listed in the search engines rather quickly.

Something to think about is spam content. You want your blog to be read by people or businesses that will be influenced or swayed either to become interested or buy the product or service you offer. With free hosting sites, you can be sure that a large proportion of blog traffic will be generated by organizations associated with the free hosting company; a very cheap advertising deal for them and no blog profit for you. While a free hosting site may cost you nothing, a professional hosting site is not expensive to manage, even for individuals.

Blogging for Traffic and Profit

November 20, 2009 by Joseph · Leave a Comment

blog profitAre you ready to turn your blog writing into traffic and cash?  It’s really not as difficult as you may think.  I’ve shared on the site several times about driving traffic and getting prospects with your blog, but I haven’t spoken too often about building profits from your blog.  Let me take you through a few thoughts in this post that can help you build blog profits quickly.

The first thing to do when beginning blogging for profits is to make a plan. Think through your goals and be specific.  Add those goals to a timeline and stick to it. During the early stages, don’t question your dedication to your blogging project.  When you reach one of your planned goals, give yourself compensation and then move forward, still sticking to your plan.  There are typically two reasons why bloggers fail to make money with a blog.

First, bloggers tend to have unrealistic expectations about how quickly their readership will grow and how much cash they will make.  When these expectations are not met, the disappointment can take away the desire to continue blog writing for money.  The other reason why many fail has to do with the lack of planning.  The key to success is to make a realistic plan and stick with it, if you want to turn a profit.
